SAFETY CORNER

Do the Tandem Slide:

TIPS TO LIVE BY

  • Align the truck and trailer on level ground to reduce tension on the release latch.

  • Use an extension rod to reach the latch handle instead of bending your back, twisting your shoulder, or placing yourself between the tires and trailer.

  • Only the driver should adjust the tandems to prevent miscommunication that can put helpers at high risk.

  • Consider using a tandem stopper tool to remove the need to frequently check the locking pins or to use a helper.

  • Before pulling away, check all locking pins to make sure they are firmly secured in the slide rail holes.

  • Report mechanical problems to your supervisor or maintenance shop.

  • Before you exit the cab look for debris, ice, oil or holes in the ground.

  • Always use three points of contact to enter or exit your cab.

  • Wear reflective clothing when outside your truck.

GEOTAB TIPS

 Ensure your device functions correctly.

  • Check that your ELD functions correctly. In the case of portable or phone ELD devices, check that the battery is fully charged.

  • If you have any questions about whether your device is working correctly, report it to your carrier and put it in writing if possible.

  • Putting it in writing gives you proof that you brought the issue to the attention of your carrier, in the event that it becomes a malfunction later.

 Verify ELD documentation is accessible.

Ensure you have the three required ELD documents in the cab/accessible electronically:

  1. Transfer Guide

  2. ELD Manual

  3. Malfunction Guide

Keep backup paper logs on board.

  • Ensure you have at least 8 days’ worth of blank paper logs on hand in case of an issue with your ELD.

  • These four elements (the three ELD documents listed above and additional blank paper logs) are required to be onboard at all times.

  • You may be in violation if you do not have them available.

Check the driver interface and placement.

Lastly, make sure your driver interface (the screen you use to enter RODS, view time remaining, etc.) is mounted to the vehicle and in line-of-sight, while also maintaining compliance with other state rules such as no windshield mounting. Keeping the ELD device appropriately mounted and in line-of-sight is an ELD requirement. If you use a portable tablet/phone device, ensure you have a mount for it, as officers can cite you if it is not secured while being used as part of your ELD solution.

HUMAN RESOURCES

MEDICAL INSURANCE - It is medical insurance renewal time for all except the PA employees. Our plans - the Health Savings Account (HSA) plan and the regular PPO plan - remain the same. This year our plans our renewing on March 1st with NO premium increase to employees.

  • Anyone currently enrolled will be rolled over at the new rate.

  • Anyone wanting to enroll or make a change is eligible to do so during the month of February. An Enrollment/Change Request form must be submitted to HR/Payroll by February 28th.

  • If you had previously declined enrollment, you will remain in a declined status unless you elect to enroll.

  • Renewal packets have been mailed to the home addresses of all ME, NC, SC & FL benefits eligible employees who do not have a company e-mail address.

  • All can access a copy of the renewal letter and the forms by logging on to the ADP Employee Self-Service website. Once in, go to the Home page, and click on the link in the Benefits section.

LIFE AND DISABILITY BENEFITS - Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability and Supplemental Life insurances for all employees also renew as of March 1st. As these plans renewed for a two year term last year, there are no premium or plan changes. See the attached for more details.

  • If you are currently enrolled in any or all of the plans, and want to remain enrolled, you need not do anything and they will automatically roll over at the current rate(s).

  • If you are not enrolled and would like to, now is the time. Complete the enrollment form and the Evidence of Insurability (links are set up in ADP) and return them to HR/Payroll by the February 28th deadline.

  • Renewal packets have been mailed to the home addresses of all benefits eligible employees who do not have a company e-mail address.

  • All can access a copy of the renewal letter and the forms by logging on to the ADP Employee Self-Service website. Once in, go to the Home page, and click on the link in the Benefits section.

Contact Deb in Human Resources (X4104) or Jennifer in Payroll (X4115) with any questions.

Again, the deadline for retuning forms to HR/Payroll is close of business Friday, February, 28th.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Stephen Malia

Service Writer

Steve came to RCM in March of 2016, filling the newly created position of Service Writer, bringing with him “over 40 years in the automotive and trucking field. I have been a technician and for the past 18 years have run different automotive and truck repair facilities.”

What does a Service Writer do?

As a Service Writer, Steve processes warranty and policy work to help keep maintenance costs down.

For the past 4 years, Steve has served as back up support to the Maintenance Director. Since Brad’s departure in early February, and under Kelly’s direction, Steve has taken on more of a lead role while we continue our search to find the right fit to fill the MD position. Cross-trained in all aspects of running a shop, in addition to his regular duties, Steve’s days are filled by coordinating assignments with our shop technicians, handling breakdowns, and inventory control.

Any hobbies? What do you do in your off time?

For fun I enjoy spending time on my boat on Sebago Lake and spending time with my granddaughter Stella. I also ski, bike and camp when time allows.
